Lifestyle News: In our busy lives today, many people pay more attention to getting enough protein and forget about another important part of a healthy diet fibre. Fibre is essential for good digestion, gut health, blood sugar balance, and cholesterol control. Still, many people fail to eat enough of it, especially while trying to keep their protein intake high. Dr. Joseph Salhab, a gastroenterologist, shared on Instagram on October 4 how people can increase their fibre intake without giving up protein. He offered simple advice and easy food swaps to make eating healthy easier and more practical. “Surprisingly, 95% of people don’t get enough fibre,” Dr. Joseph said. He added that the ideal amount of fibre each day should be between 30 and 35 grams. The best part is that you don’t have to pick between fibre and protein many foods give you both. Dr. Joseph suggested a few easy ways to get more fibre while still keeping up your protein levels:
Foods like lentils, chickpeas, black beans, kidney beans, edamame, and split peas are rich in both protein and fibre.
Chia seeds, flaxseeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, and peanuts are small but full of nutrition. You can add them to smoothies, salads, or snacks.
Grains such as quinoa, oats, barley, bulgur, buckwheat, farro, and sprouted grain bread provide complex carbs along with good amounts of fibre and protein.
Tofu, tempeh, and soy protein powder are great plant-based choices that are easy to include in meals and help maintain both fibre and protein levels.
Green vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, spinach, artichokes, and green peas are high in fibre and also give your body natural protein.
